By the time the Boy Scouts magazine published this painting on its cover, readers had already become familiar with his artwork through his article and story illustrations. Rockwell was hired to be art director of Boys' Life in 1913. This was then 18 year old Rockwell's first job with a magazine. Boys' Life was a fairly new publication at this time. The first issue was published in March 1911. There is no doubt that part of its early success was due to its fine young art director. Boy SkatingIt is no wonder Norman Rockwell delighted in painting children. He painted them so well. In this painting, Rockwell captures the joy and exhilaration of ice skating. Rockwell returns to this same subject of ice skating several more times during his artistic career. Here is the complete list of all Norman Rockwell magazine covers. This boy is skating along on what appears to be a very large pond or even a river that has frozen over. We can see that it is a large body of ice by the distant images in the background. It is January in New York. Rockwell always tried to keep his paintings current. This made his artwork more interesting and also assured him of having a topic. The boy is carrying a stick shaped similar to a hockey stick. He appears to skating swiftly almost as if he is running on his skates. His posture and his scarf indicate his speed. We do not see the puck. We can assume he is chasing whoever has the puck or rock or ball or whatever is being played with in place of the puck.
