Scouting with Daniel Boone by Norman Rockwell
June 1914 Issue of Boys' Life
Scouting with Daniel Boone, this Norman Rockwell painting, appeared on the cover of Boys' Life published June 1914.
This marked Rockwell's ninth cover publication.
Well before the Boy Scouts magazine ever published this painting on the cover, readers had already become familiar with his artwork through his magazine article and story illustrations.
Rockwell had been the art director of Boys' Life since being hired for the position in 1912. Being art director was the 18 year old Rockwell's first job with a magazine.
Boys' Life was still a fairly new publication in 1914. The first issue was published March 1, 1911. Certainly, its early success was in large part due to its fine young art director. Having a talent like Rockwell couldn't hurt.
Scouting with Daniel Boone
The serial story, Scouting with Daniel Boone by Everett T Tomlinson, begins in this issue of Boys' Life. This was the first of six installments. Rockwell illustrated all six installments. This was his last cover until May 1915 when he began illustrating the Don Strong serial.
This painting was only one of 55 Norman Rockwell Boys' Life covers; here is the list of more Norman Rockwell Boys' Life covers, advertisements and story illustrations.
Here is the complete list of all Norman Rockwell magazine covers.
This is also one of the least colorful of all Rockwell's cover illustrations. It is all painted in shades of brown. It is really amazing what a talented hard-working person can do with different shades of only one color.
Nonetheless, we see a young to midlife Daniel Boone walking with a friend. He is dressed in buckskin clothes. Unlike the TV version, he wears a hat, instead of a coonskin cap.
He and his friend are moving stealthily over a fallen log in a clearing in the woods. Are they scouting a trail? Are they hunting for pleasure or profit? Or are they fighting Indians or British soldiers?
I guess we will have to read the story to get the full background story for this painting.
