This Norman Rockwell painting, entitled Santa Napping, appeared on the cover of Farm And Fireside on the December 1922 issue... (continued) Alternate titles for this picture include The Day After Christmas and December 26th.
This was the fifth and final cover by Rockwell to appear on Farm And Fireside. Rockwell only submitted to this smaller magazine after the bigger publishers had rejected the cover illustration. Santa Napping or The Day After ChristmasThe biggest question that pops in my mind is " How did George Horace Lorimer let this painting get away?"Almost as big a question is "How did Farm And Fireside land this painting for its cover?" Farm And Fireside was towards the bottom of Rockwell's preference for publishing his work. Hence, only five Rockwell covers were published by Farm And Fireside. This is simply a marvelous painting. Rockwell always painted Santa Claus masterfully. In fact, his version of Santa has come to be the Santa we think of today. In this painting, the date is December 26th, the day after Christmas. We are allowed to peek into the Claus home. Marked on the calendar on December 26th is the word "rest" and it is underlined. Do you think Santa really needed that reminder? Santa has just arrived home from his worldwide trek to reward all the good children. He has delivered a lot of gifts in a very short amount of time. I would imagine that the bigger job was to carry all the coal and switches for all the bad children. Remember when bad children were punished? Whether because of the good children or bad children, Santa is clearly exhausted. He has parked himself in his favorite chair. H has taken his boots, gloves and hat off. He has propped his feet on an ottoman. The chair doesn't look very comfortable, but Santa is fast asleep. If he had an easy chair, he would probably be asleep with his boots still on.
