An alternate title for this painting is Five Friends in the Country.

This was the Rockwell's first cover to appear on Milestones and the first of two in 1917. Milestones only featured Rockwell on its cover twice.

Rockwell was commissioned to paint this cover by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Milestones was Firestone's corporate magazine.

This is one of the hardest to find Rockwell magazine covers.

If you like Girl on Hill with Bouquet, here is our list of Norman Rockwell magazine covers. There you will find links to all the magazine covers that Rockwell painted.

Girl on Hill with Bouquet

This girl and her four friends have taken a drive in the country. Certainly, the tires on their motorcar are Firestone tires. The subliminal message is that the whole day is possible because of the tires on the automobile.

The girl standing on the hill holds a bouquet of fresh picked flowers. She hasn't picked all the flowers on the hill yet. Some flowers still remain unpicked in the lower left corner of the painting.

The wind appears to be blowing on top of the hill. The standing girl's hat appears to have blown off of her head. Her sash and the hair bow of the seated girl are both billowing in the breeze. The gentleman in the immediate background is walking towards us with his tie blowing. This is June, however, and depicting a breeze in the painting lets Rockwell make us feel cooler.

There are more men than women in this painting. May we assume that the man in the background with his back to us is the driver. He appears to be remaining with the car.

The last of the main elements of this painting is the dog. Did the dog ride here with the group of friends? Or does the dog belong to the people who own this hill? His mouth is open: Is he barking at the girl who just picked flowers? Or is he just catching his breath after a good run in the fresh air of the country...
