This was the second cover in Rockwell's popular series about the city and country cousins.

This illustration was also the second Country Gentleman cover by Norman Rockwell. Rockwell painted thirty-three covers for The Country Gentleman starting with August 1917, the first Cousin Reginald cover, and continuing through April 1922.

Cousin Reginald Goes in Swimming

Our second installment finds Cousin Reginald adjusting to country life. Well, almost.

He is still testing the waters, literally.

This painting has many, many interesting features.

First let's consider Cousin Rusty. He is behind his city cousin on the left. While Reginald is timidly testing the water with his foot, Rusty is preparing to splash him. The next frame, if this were a movie, would show Reginald looking surprised as well as dripping wet.

The other boys, Tubby and Chucky, are looking with anticipation at the Rusty and Reginald show. It is almost more than Tubby can bear. He is almost bursting with laughter just thinking about it.

All three of the country boys jumped right in the pond, getting their hair wet. They haven't a care in the world.

Even Patsy the dog has been swimming while Reggie is making up his mind. She has fetched him a stick. Maybe she will switch him into the water.

Now we consider Cousin Reginald. First off, he has on a real bathing suit. The other boys have on shorts or nothing. He also has water-wings, even if he hasn't actually entered the water yet.

He has also brought with him a towel, soap (red object on towel) and a brush set (black object on towel.) The whole bundle will be soaking wet shortly!
