Cousin Reginald Goes Fishing
by Norman Rockwell

October 6, 1917 Issue of The Country Gentleman

Cousin Reginald Goes Fishing, this Norman Rockwell painting, appeared on the cover of The Country Gentleman published October 6, 1917.

This illustration was Rockwell's third cover to appear on the Country Gentleman. This was also a well received installment of Rockwell's ongoing series about the foibles and occasional triumphs of city Cousin Reginald Claude Fitzhugh.

Cousin Reginald Goes Fishing

Here is a painting almost guaranteed to appealed to the audience of The Country Gentleman readers. Norman Rockwell knew his audience and made sure he painted something that would interest them.

In this illustration, Cousin Reginald goes fishing and catches more than he intended. Reginald and the other boys, cousin Rusty Doolittle and friend Chuck Peterkin, are all fishing and enjoying a fall afternoon. Suddenly Cousin Reginald gets a bite!

From the angle of the rod and line, Cousin Reginald's catch put up a great fight. But, lo and behold, when he lands his catch, he has caught nothing but Patsy the dog!

We do not know whether or not Patsy is the first catch of the day. We do know that Cousin Reginald seems surprised to see her coming out of the water.

Norman Rockwell portrayed Cousin Reginald as still not being at home in the country. He is still wearing his good clothes. In contrast, the other boys are wearing their tattered and mended clothes to go fishing. Cousin Reginald even wears his familiar red necktie and matching red knee socks.

Rockwell's Cousin Reginald series continued with more good clean fun until the last painting in the series published June 21, 1919 .
